What to Bring?
Everyone's been asking, "What should I bring?" Well, the most important thing
to bring is a sense of humor. With that (and a towel), most things are bearable.
Depending on if you're going on the Chesapeake Bay, the ICW, or the ocean passage,
there are different things to bring. Remember — EVERYTHING WILL GET WET
and some things will GO OVER THE SIDE! Don't bring any irreplaceable
items. First, let's start with the basics:
- Hat
- Suntan Lotion
- Warm clothes (it can get cold at night)
- Bug repellent
- Books (there will be books onboard Voyager and Willow, but maybe not
your favorites)
- CDs (there is a cassette player on Willow, too)
- Entertainment (cards, games, etc.)
- Camera
- Seasickness medicine (if you need help with this, Scott and Jack are experts at getting
sick!)
- Recommended — a personal journal
Chesapeake Bay
If you're going on the Chesapeake Bay run, you may also need additional gear. If you
don't own some of this gear, please check with Scott or Jack to see if you can borrow it.
The recommended gear includes:
- Foul weather gear — tops, bottoms, boots
- Safety harness
- Personal flashlight
ICW
On the ICW, for the most part the water is rather tame. There will be a few spots, like
Albemarle Sound and Pamlico Sound, where it may get nasty for a few hours. The basics
listed above should work fine for the ICW, with the addition of:
- Foul weather gear — tops (optional bottoms and boots)
Ocean Passage
For the ocean passages, you'll need to bring the following items:
- Real seasickness medicine (we don't turn back for seasickness!)
- Foul weather gear — tops, bottoms (boots optional). You may be living in these for
days on end.
- Safety harness (you will be wearing this 24 hours a day)
- Personal flashlight
- Any experiments that you may want to conduct
Any questions? Please contact Jack or Scott.
