Boats last a very long time. It's not unusual for someone to purchase a new-to-them boat that's 30 or more years old. Older boat have similar problems when it comes to the electrical system and electronics: Wiring "Improvements" By Previous OwnersIt's bewildering seeing some of the so-called wiring jobs in these older boats. You know the boats, the ones with speaker wire running everywhere, wire nuts and masking tape holding wires together, six or more splices in each wire, etc. Outdated Ways of Doing ThingsDoes your AC wiring system use cartridge fuses? Are there any knife switches aboard? Are there dozens of wires coming off the batteries? Update Your Electrical SystemMy philosophy is to do just what's required while enjoying your boat. A lot of people will tell you that you have to start over, and they may be right, but I think you should use the boat, as long as it is safe. For example, if the AC wiring is an abysmal mess, go use the boat, but don't plug it into shore power until you update the AC.
